LEARNING FROM ISRAEL
Israel's successful vaccine rollout makes the country an important test case for how quickly consumer activity bounces back as economies reopen. In his review of lessons to be learned so far, Emerging Markets Economist Liam Peach shows how spending on leisure and hospitality has come back faster than it did following previous lockdowns, while infection and hospitalisation rates haven't risen as restrictions have eased. But Liam also highlights the policy implications of a dramatic slowdown in vaccination rates now that most over-60s have been fully vaccinated.
"If developments in Israel are anything to go by, this may be an early sign that the discussion about introducing vaccine passports in other parts of the world may give way to or be accompanied by the introduction of rapid testing," Liam says.
